CONTACT: Dr. James Seeley, Executive Director,  Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County

(Glens Falls)—Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County and Glens Falls Hospital Health Promotion Center are partners in “Creating Healthy Places,” a project dedicated to improving physical activity and awareness of healthy food opportunities through local policy and environmental changes in Warren County. The program, involving community agencies and the hospital, is funded through a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

Nutritional strategies for “Creating Healthy Places” will be led by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County whose focus will be on increasing the availability of fresh produce to residents of Warren County, especially those who are underserved. “Healthy lifestyles begin with access to healthy foods and healthy habits, and we are pleased at the level of commitment our community partners are devoting to this initiative,” said Melissa Chinigo, Glens Falls Hospital Health Promotion Center.

Bert Weber, a horticulture educator and food coordinator with the Glens Falls Community Garden, will develop and mange Community Garden programs for “Creating Healthy Places.” Projects are planned at the Village Green in Glens Falls and several other existing locations in Warren County.

Promoting healthy foods and their presence in local convenience stores will be led by Paula Schafer, who brings 20 years experience to the program through her work in Agriculture and Economic Development with Cornell Cooperative Extension.

Additional partners of “Creating Healthy Places” include the Adirondack Rural Health Network, and the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce.
